Brazil Wind Resource Map 2024

May 9, 2024
Wind resource maps and their corresponding data can fill critical needs at several stages in wind project development. They support site prospecting and early-stage feasibility studies, help evaluate alternative project sites and provide the basis for preliminary or advanced plant design and energy production estimates.
UL Solutions is an industry leader in the science and application of resource mapping and modeling. Our emphasis on high-resolution modeling using the most advanced methods and extensive validation means you can use our wind maps and data to help you make sound decisions about the future of your wind project. Some key benefits of our maps and data include:
  • High-resolution difference, offering 200 m data for preliminary assessments, when met masts are not available yet at the site.1
  • UL Solutions proprietary modeling approach – A combination of global reanalysis, meso-micro scale wind flow modeling, and the adjustment with measurements either public or shared by our clients.
  • Utilize the same data and tools our experts use.
The improvements in our maps and data can come from an improvement in the modeling system or in the data that feed it, or the incorporation of more measurement points that allow model errors to be corrected and reduce the map uncertainty.
UL clients in Brazil have provided us with a total of 216 measurement towers, spread across several states in the country, to reduce the uncertainty of the existing map. After adjusting the map with the observations, the following results have been obtained:
BIASMAERMSE
(m/s)(%)(m/s)(%)(m/s)(%)
Previous Map0.485.4%0.778.6%0.9810.9%
New Map-0.01-0.1%0.444.9%0.606.7%
The adjustment with the new towers has allowed us to reduce the bias to a residual value. The measurements have also had an important impact on the reduction of the mean absolute error and of the root mean squared error.
The above results prove that the new map of Brazil is significantly more accurate than the previous one. This map can be used to prospect new locations or to make preliminary production estimates in those sites where in-situ measurement data is not available. For both applications, data can be downloaded in different formats from the RRAP and Windnavigator platforms.
1. For advanced plant design and energy production estimates we offer data at a higher resolution of 50 m. It’s recommended to use this data only when local measurements have been recorded for a sufficient time, as no adjustment is performed over the model output.
